Choosing the Location and Design
The first step towards building a garden wall is selecting the perfect location for it. Consider the purpose of the wall, whether you want it for privacy, aesthetics, or to section off different areas. Additionally, think about what design would best complement your garden's style. (For more details check out this site)
Determining Materials and Measurements
Note down the measurements of the area where you plan to construct your garden wall. Decide on suitable materials such as bricks, stones, or concrete blocks that will withstand weather conditions in your region.
Gathering Tools and Materials
Gather all necessary tools like a spirit level, trowel, hammer, spade, safety glasses etc.
Prepare the Foundation
Begins by clearing any vegetation and debris from the area where you will build your garden wall. Then level out this space using soil or sand before compacting it thoroughly.
Laying Out The First Course
Lay out a row of bricks/blocks/slabs with mortar along one side of your prepared foundation ensuring that they are levelled correctly. Use string lines or straight edges for guidance while checking levels regularly. Make sure each brick/block is properly aligned using a spirit level.
Mixing Mortar
In a wheelbarrow or mixing container combine cement with sand according to proper proportions and mix them together until you have a homogenous consistency.
Construct the Wall
Start from the corners and build upwards, applying mortar to both sides of each brick/block as you go. Play close attention to keeping everything level and plumb as you work your way along. Remove any excess mortar using a trowel or jointing tool. Repeat these steps until you reach the desired height of your garden wall.
Create Openings
If desired, plan for openings in the wall such as gateways or windows by leaving gaps between bricks/blocks during construction. Ensure that these spaces are carefully measured and reinforced accordingly.
Finish the Wall
Clean off any remaining mortar residue from bricks/blocks using a brush or sponge once it has set but before it hardens completely. You can use other materials like paint or stone cladding to enhance the appearance of your garden wall if desired.
